Kunal Rawal talks on how he funked up Shahid Kapoor’s look in ‘Phata Poster Nikhla Hero’

1235886_623037311082283_1254261823_n

Kunal Rawal is extremely happy with the feedback that he has been getting for Shahid Kapoor’s look in Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, which is up for release this week. Since everyone’s look based on the character they played, he was given the task to create different looks for Kapoor who plays Vishwas Rao in the film. Rawal came up with a palette of colourful silhouettes, bold prints as well as a muted colour palette to reflect Vishwas Rao’s journey from small town to Mumbai.

Changing colours

“Vishwas Rao is a small town boy, who harbours a dream of becoming an actor. In the initial portions, you will see Shahid wearing a lot of neutral coloured shirts with long sleeves, collar T -shirts and pants in muted colours. The look is more local, with easygoing outfits,” stated Rawal. It is only as the film progresses that you get to know more about the character’s passion for cinema and how badly he wants to make it big in Bollywood. At this stage, the audience gets to see glimpses of his aspirations and that’s when his outfits also undergo a change and begins to include fitted denims in bold colours and slim fit shirts. “When Vishwas finally comes down to Mumbai, there is a change in his clothing style as well. He starts wearing outfits that will help him get noticed and get a big break. The colours become funkier and he starts wearing random stuff like flashy accessories. For example: even when Shahid is wearing a cop uniform, he is seen in a pair of reflective blue aviators which are not usually worn by cops.” reveals the designer.

Taking inspiration

The designer confessed that he took a lot of inspiration from aspiring actors across the city, especially the ones who frequent areas like Juhu, Oshiwara and Lokhandwala for auditions. He also observed newbies who visit sets to meet directors or producers, while waiting in the wings to get a break. Rawal elaborates, “Some aspiring actors wear specific type of outfits, especially fitted clothes to show off their muscles. It’s the whole ‘muscle hain toh dikhao‘ attitude. It was interesting to take inspiration from real people like that. I also went through portfolios of aspiring actors to see the kind of outfits they prefer. For some, it’s all about showing off your best assets to get a break.” A huge chunk of outfits in this film was made from scratch, but a couple of accessories, polo t-shirts among other things were sourced from markets in Lokhandwala, Versova, Goregaon, Tardeo and Haji Ali to add a hint of local flavour to the outfits

Ranbir Kapoor: I will be the best one day

1235886_623037311082283_1254261823_n

Chasing Ranbir Kapoor these days is more difficult than chasing your ex-girlfriend. It took me 48 hours, 10 text messages and close to a dozen phone calls to finally share our common passion – nespresso, in his personally designed new vanity van filled with some of his favorite movies. Then of course, there are those famous FC Barcelona flip-flops neatly kept under his hair and make up trolley and ‘The King of Oil’ – Secret Lives of Marc Rich by Daniel Ammann kept on his side table for his leisure read. To give him company, his mini fridge is stacked up with Diet Pepsi and for those lazy hours, his Rockstar coffee mug stands gracefully for that sip of nostalgia. You don’t need a reason to know why you like Ranbir Kapoor, but here’s a really petty one: He’s one of those actors who carries his ‘don’t-give-a-damn’ attitude, stuff their life to the brim and carry it off like it’s a fleck of dust on their shoulder. He works constantly. Always has. Then he tells me, “I spend more time in my vanity than at home”, and after ordering my nespresso, he continues, “Out of the five days we celebrate Ganesh puja at home, I was there only for 2 days and I had to miss our RK Studio Ganesh visarjan too.” And in the midst of all this, he reckons that everything is fine. It’s hard to imagine Ranbir on a movie junket, where stars are installed in a suite and journalists queue to question them for a maximum of around eleven minutes or so, timed by a PR with a stopwatch. But the truth is – The man is surreal. He’ll always give you more than you’ve ever wanted – be it his time in person or his performance in movies. Sure, there’s the affable, charming young actor whose name crops up every now and then – the one you’ve come to know in the gossip pages, at a near by pub with friends, at family gatherings or at some girl’s bachelorette party. And then there’s this other guy, the one I know. The one who’s a little more shy yet a bit Besharam. He’s much more interesting. I call him our National Treasure.

Movie Review: Grand Masti

Critic’s Rating: 4 Star Rating: Recommended4 Star Rating: Recommended4 Star Rating: Recommended
Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani
Direction: Indra Kumar
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes
phata-poster-nikla-hero-hq-poster
College mates Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani have uncontrollable libidos, but get very little sex in their married lives. Their mundane existence stems from the fact that their wives —- Karisma Tanna, Sonalee and Manjari Fadnis — give more attention to work, the baby and family, in that order.

But there appears to be someone listening to their prayers. A college reunion gets them together. And they fervently hope this would be their chance to chase skirts and their fantasies. On campus, the men reunite with an over-sexed teacher, Rose ( Maryam Zakaria), a vacuous brunette, Mary ( Bruna Abdullah) and Marlow (Kainaat Arora), whose names, when pronounced together, beat most expletives.

A lot of double-meaning jokes, oohs and aahs reveal that the women in their lives are related to their college principal, who lands up at the doorstep just when the action is getting heated. Some more sexual mayhem follows and before you know it, the irrepressible threesome is lying on hospital beds with multiple fractures. They sheepishly vow never to stray.

Riteish, Vivek and Aftab are comfortable in their roles and even manage to say some of the most terrible things with a poker face. The girls are not really required to act. While the wives are shown to be particularly dumb, the temptresses with vacuous expressions and ample cleavage make the impact they are required to.

Review: Grand Masti stakes its claim to being Bollywood’s first adult comedy. And, just like the innumerable puerile potboilers that India’s dream factory churns out with a warning that says — leave your brains behind, this one should have a disclaimer that reads, ‘Leave your pretensions behind’. Once you do this, you can sit back and laugh aloud at the crass jokes this film throws up at regular intervals.
